The various types of software that you have on your computer regularly require updates that help to keep them running smoothly and efficiently. This is especially essential for programs that help to protect your computer from malicious attacks and viruses.

When you first install a program from the web, make sure that you are buying it from a reputable source. If not, you could be downloading hidden surprises that could cause problems later on. When you install, make sure that you select the option for automatic updates. Your computer will be set to request the necessary updates as scheduled by the program, making your task simpler. You can even alter the date and time for the updates as you see fit.

Antivirus and other security programs will not run correctly without proper updates. Worms, viruses and spyware change on a daily basis, making it essential for these programs to have the most current information to fight them. These programs can become outdated quickly, so it is wise to periodically manually update in between the scheduled ones.

Media players are another set of programs that require regular updates. This helps them to efficiently stream video and audio without skips, pauses or other issues. Having a computer is a very essential part of everyday life. But, it’s important to always make sure the computer is in top condition. Some computers, with good care, can last several years. The average life of any PC is about 4 years. But, there is the chance that software and hardware can easily become outdated within a year. To prevent this, there are some steps to be taken to update any computer regularly.

Hard drive space is easy to fill, especially if the current drive is small. And, if all that space has been filled, a PC will generally run slower. Upgrading to a larger hard drive is a good way to increase space and give the PC more room to run smoother. It may be wise to also upgrade the RAM if the PC becomes sluggish. The best way to do this is to look up the computer’s motherboard online and check to see which RAM sticks are compatible with it. To find what type of motherboard the computer has, look at the serial number printed on the board. It’s usually between the RAM slots.

Sometimes all the computer may need is a new central processing unit or CPU. It’s very easy to install a CPU and most packages come with everything necessary to put it in. Again, make sure to check the compatibility of the motherboard. Keeping a PC updated is important for the longevity of the unit. It makes having to buy a new unit less important, and gives a person the opportunity to still be productive.

Computers can now serve as telephones. As long as users have the necessary connections and software, your telephone can read the signals coming through the wire and transform them into digital ones so that your voice and that of your caller’s can be heard.

This technique is referred to as VoIP, which stands for “Voice Over Internet Protocol.” The advent of broadband connections and their subsequent presence in most communities is what helped to move this technology forward.

With VoIP, you can talk with someone anywhere in the world (since it comes through the Internet.) In some instances, these calls are treated as local calls; in other words, there are no long-distance charges incurred. In other cases, you may have to pay a small fee or have the service added on to your Internet bill. Your Internet provider can give you cost information.

It is possible, using certain programs, to not only talk to someone in another part of the world, but to also see that person. There are several programs that provide this service; however, both users must have the appropriate software and hardware (a video camera) installed in order to see each other.

Even being able to talk to someone via the Internet is still pretty impressive. And with the improvements and updates being made in wireless technology, it is now possible to talk with someone from just about any location. Strategically placed routers make this possible.

If all this sounds like something out of a spy movie where the hero has access to all the latest gadgets, then you need to know that it’s now a reality. It is possible to do this, and usually the cost is relatively reasonable.

Depending on your Internet provider, it may actually be cheaper to utilize VoIP than to use regular phone service (both “landline” and cell.) Again, this will vary, so you need to check with your provider concerning how much it will cost.

Pros & Cons of Computer Options

New types of computers are being released at a fast rate all in the hopes of luring you into buying a new computer. From the mega-Smartphones, which could easily be referred to as computers (complete with every capability your laptop has), to the huge, chunky computers of yester-year, there are a lot of options to consider. Here are a few pros and cons to consider before you make a purchase:

General Laptop

PRO – A laptop is an acceptable computer for any scenario, almost. You can use it at home, in the office, or on flights.

CON – Sometimes a laptop requires more juice than is readily available, like on an international flight. Although great batteries abound for the wealthy, an average person can expect just a few hours of fun before a laptop will shut down.

Desktop Computer

PRO – A desktop is sturdy and unlikely to be damaged. Also, it enables people to practice good posture and won’t get you mugged in public.

CON – Clearly, you can’t use your desktop on a bus, or even at work, with ease. Don’t try it or you’ll just feel silly in the process (and even if you succeed, you will have back problems for at least a month).

Smartphone Computing

PRO – Easy to carry and hide, your smartphone can go anywhere you do. Cheap emergency phone rechargers are available so that you won’t be stuck reading an in-flight magazine, and nothing is more handy than something hand-sized.

CON – The screen size is tiny. Even a huge smartphone has a small screen, which can be uncomfortable for e-reading, browsing technology sites, and playing on the Internet for long periods of time.

Based upon the pros and cons of each device, there is clearly a best option for any scenario. However, when Chrome releases its new mid-sized netbook, the playing field may be altered forever.
